The link to this article was sent to me this morning by another Dexter breeder. I was surprised there was no mention of the Chillingham herd in the article as historians have documented Chillingham herd to the 1600's and believe it has been behind the walls since the 1300's so I cannot imagine any cattle that would be closer genetically to the Aurochs which this article said were last documented to 1627.

Thank you, Judy.
I had found this article abut a year ago and was enthralled by it, but then couldn't find it again. I also don't recall seeing the video that is imbedded.
Now I have a link and can read it at leisure. Thanks again.

Bill,
Sorry! I missed owing you this response.
The Chillingham herd is a herd of cattle that lives behind castle walls in England. The herd is documented to the 1600's but there is circumstantial information that possibly dates them to the 1300's. This herd has never been managed or handled by man. They live as a feral breed. They resemble white park cattle. In all those centuries they have changed very little. . . . nor have they been miniaturized. During the war years I think the population dropped to around 40 something at one time. If ever one needed proof that breeding within a bloodline is OK. . . this herd would be it! I have always been fascinated by these cattle.
If you want to read about them just google, " chillingham cattle".
Judy
