To the leadership of both ADCA and PDCA. . .
Marge and Mark Davis purchased their first foundation cows and the bull Peerless Irish that formed the basis for the Colorado herd in 1965. ( The transfers are found in the 1966 herd book). In the beginning of the 1970's another cow was added, #1242 Juletta Dee and in the mid 70's another bull was added from the Bradys Run herd.
The herd was then "closed" as no other Dexter other than those born on the farm were ever added to the herd. The Colorado herd was built on 4 cows, 3 of which were just a few generations off the original imports from Ireland and two bulls. Marge and Mark preserved early genetics in this breed and there isn't a one of us who knows what a stellar accomplishment that might be for the breed and frankly even for mankind, though I believe the rapid advancement of science and research may oneday give us a positive answer.
Most of their herd is now in a preservation effort to preserve these early bloodlines.
( The only other closed herd of this type in the breed, the Woodmagic herd was not closed until the early 1980's).
Mark and Marge still have young Dexters on their farm.
This is the 49th year they have been Dexter breeders, and when the calendar turns to 2015 I hope they will be able to celebrate a landmark US anniversary of 50 years in the breed.
Not only were Marge and Mark breeders and owners of Dexter cattle, they worked with the original association and registry to shepherd it through the years in various ways both as resident agent for the ADCA Delaware legal papers and holding leadership positions.
Could I interest both ADCA and PDCA in doing an article on Marge and Mark for your winter or spring publications?
Do you have someone who would be willing to write the article? I am willing to help with information but I know so much less of their activities than folks like Rosemary and Dean or Jim Johnson, Sandy Thomas, Jack Goodman and other long time members who worked with them through the years.

Legacy
PS: Mr. Williams I am sending this to you as ADCA Director in the region where the Davis' reside. Although they are no longer members of or necessarily affiliated with either Association, they have certainly been active in both through the years and there is NO ONE living with this longevity in the breed or who have maintained the genetic purity to the extent they did and they certainly merit recognition by the groups that represent the breed.
