In planning down the road I am needing to clarify things in my own mind. What are the methods of achieving a Legacy Dexter ? Can a Traditional heard be breed up to a Legacy Herd and if so what would be the best approach?

I can answer the last question. The answer is that an animal that contains a disqualifying animal in its ancestry can never have the disqualifying animal bred out of its ancestry. All of its offspring and all of their offspring will have the disqualifying animal in their ancestry.
A Legacy Dexter is a rare and precious thing. There are very few of them left and very few people dedicated to preserving them. A single breeding to a non-Legacy animal will make a calf that is not Legacy qualified, nor can any of that calf's offspring ever be Legacy qualified.
Once the last Legacy Dexters disappear, they can never be re-created. It falls upon us to preserve and reproduce the remaining Legacy Dextrers, to keep them going.
Today, there are only 100 Legacy Qualified Dexters registered with the Legacy Dexter Cattle Registry (LDCR).
In my time as a Dexter owner, I have never found one of the elusive Legacy Qualified Dexters available to buy. I have one, that I got as an embryo and had it transferred into my best cow to gestate, birth and raise as her own. That is a lot of effort in order to get one Legacy cow, but I am so pleased with her. I would do the same again. I have purchased semen from a good Legacy Qualified bull, Fairy Hill Peter, to AI her after she has her calf, due at Christmas. That will give her a fifth calf, her first Legacy calf. Her first four calves were all sired by Brenn, a Traditional bull, so they are Traditional, also.

If you are committed and pat and willing to travel you can find them. I have traveled all over to find them. Currently 10 of our females are Legacy and 6 Legacy bulls. I sell bulls but at this point am still looking for more so no females will be sold from me for a while.

At my age I will be satisfied with the Traditional unless I was sure someone was able to continue. Mike how did you get involved in Dexters? We hope to do more traveling in the camper this next year and visit some areas. We plan on going Genes way we always wanted to see the Charalston area and we go north often. What is in Iowa besides Dexters and Farmalls?
