I love that herd. It makes me so sad to know what has been lost. My older cows that looked jut like that have passed, all but one. Even I do not kow how to get it back. The damage ( changes) were done before my time and passed along to me.

I think the missing piece is what does the long leg bull or cow need to look like in order to produce the desired dwarf. Most of the old pictures are of the dwarfs. I get that film was precocious and that is what they were proud of. I have a pretty good idea of the old type long leg cows look but we dont see to many pictures of the bulls look. I think the loss of milk production is the hardest to get back.

bswatcher, as the numbers of the traditional conformed Dexters dwindle, it becomes more and more difficult to make selections to retain a specific look. As Dexterfarm says, I think the udder is probably the hardest of the qualities to retain. And without an udder like that, instead of being "back heavy" you'll have a dwarf that looks more "front heavy". And the bull is critical to that equation...it's very difficult to have sufficient numbers of older mature cows out of a specific bull to evaluate what he contributes to retaining that "look".
Though Judy breeds dwarf Dexters, I believe she's said that most of hers do not exhibit the pronounced dwarfism that helps contribute to that look. It's my belief that to get that look you'll need a cow with a very deep body, and probably also a pretty large non-carrier in terms of overall size, mated with a dwarf bull that has a very pronounced look of a carrier with very short legs that will pass on to the progeny. That will be our approach at least.

Lakeport please re read the wording of jamshundred. If the older cows looked like that but "the damage (changes) we done before my time and passed along to me", what does that mean? Does it mean that the older cows had 'the look' but were unable to pass it on due to some 'damage' in their genetic makeup?? Dwarf or non dwarf, the wedge shaped dairy type conformation of the body can be bred for. IMO it should not be hard to select for it from either type. If those older cows 'looked just like that', it should have been possible to breed for that type. Beryl Rutherford fixed a type in/line breeding around one cow. Maybe jamshundred could explain.

bs watcher,
I sign my posts. I own every word my fingers type.
You have not signed your post. The participants here are not aware of your identity. I am. It is my opinion you are not here to engage in friendly interaction. Over the years there have been times I attempted to respond to you with respect and courtesy only to find on most occasions any communication from you is a set-up. I get it you don't like me. I understand we differ in philosphy. So be it. Any communication from you is suspect. You don't ask questions of me with any real interest in anything I have to say other than as a method for attack. I decline the bait.

bs watcher,
Out of respect for you as a person and for this forum, I ask you again to please reconsider your choice of name in this group. It makes it very difficult to take anything you have to say seriously; and quite honestly it puts a very negative perception on your words.
I invite you whole heartedly to please come back with a more appropriate name, one that shows the same level of respect to your fellow members of this forum as we should all show in the groups we choose to participate in.

WV and Jams. There is only "respect" on this forum for the converted. There is little to no respect shown to those who disagree. There has been a great deal of nastiness; it can be found by scrolling older posts. So much for the sentence at the top. Didn't I just read a comment this morning which mentions "the nitwits at ADCA" or something similar. There is constant badmouthing of the Association, not critique in a respectful manner. Jams, you often choose not to answer a genuine question just as you did on your last post. If you are really interested in breeding cows that look like the old ones, what was the difficulty if you had cows that looked like that or had udders like that? Lakeport's answer does not satisfy.

See ! Told you. YOU are here to stir the pot darlin' and then YOU can say, " told you so". YOU are excited by it. YOU thrive on it. YOU like acrimony. Even your words above are structured to create a rise and response. LOL And YOU didn't have the courage to sign your name. (again) . . .and believe me darlin' it ain't because you are a shrinkin' violet. You should be like Netti. She can take and she can give . . . . and she signs her name and owns herself.
Judy
PS. Is all that fake sweetness and light from your buddies boring you to death on the other places where you participate?

The owner of this group is not interested in actual discussion of Dexter genetics, but only continuing these types of diatribes that eventually led to the removal of herself and one other poster here banned from several boards in the past. I will not participate here in future, under any name.

bswatcher,
There is courtesy shown to any who are respectful in their opinion on this board. You assume folks here have been "converted". I came here with my opinions intact. I think of Dexters as something special that should be preserved rather than changed. I think of them as an end product, not a raw material to be manipulated. Obviously you don't.
Any nastiness in scrolling older posts will be found to be in response to a poster who continuously spouts misinformation, or graphic images unrelated to the thread for the purpose of baiting, or shock value, or just to interrupt an otherwise pleasant conversation.
Most are here for a friendly sharing of information and support in their efforts with like-minded people. Some are not.
Courtesy is expected and given. Respect is earned.

LOL! Maybe you should come try us again when you are in your adult mode instead of the childish one and when you really do have an interest. I suspect that will be never.
If you really came here for actual discussion and to interact. .. . let me give you a good place where you could have and likely would have started > > > > > Perhaps on the thread where Gene was being given condolences for the loss of Brenn. You don't have to like him to understand or sympathize for his loss. Who doesn't know how much he loved his bull. Everyone, ( even someone I heard from in another country) knows how much he loved that bull. You have been on boards with Gene for years and yet you didn't even say sorry to him. Were the tables turned. . . . he'd be the first one feeling your pain and telling you so, personality or philosophical differences of the past would not have been a factor. . just the fact you were a hurting human would have been the only thing on his mind. It is what people don't say that define them more than the words they utter.
You didn't come here for any good. . . .you came here to stir up an argument, throw a slam or two my way, get the hoped for reaction from a group of folks who are NOT phoneys and say what they mean and mean what they say ( and sign their names to it - - imagine that!) and go away feeling fulfilled by whatever you feel you accomplished. LOL.
