we use the same black poly line but we use brass fittings. however there are some plastic fitting that a previous owner had installed. Pex would cost a fortune. I did use pex for the risers to my auto waters. Its been in the 50s for highs this week. We had frost last night. The grass is green and maybe 6" but not growing much. I expect to start grazing in 2 weeks. If we can get some rain and sun.

This thread sure is well named. Hopefully this will be the FINAL "last gasp"! Hans, It is good to hear you are back from your trip but 25F and 2" of snow doesn't sound like much fun. Hopefully spring will finally make its way up to your area soon. We are greening up nice here but these next few days aren't looking too good. The grass is beginning to grow but it is very patchy. It's getting pretty cold/windy again, but hopefully we will get to miss out on the snow. Oh, I don't even want to think about that.
It is still something that those lines froze that deep down. We generally like to stay down around 4ft if we can. These past winters have just been so cold. I'd say anything you could do to build the ground up and insulate over those areas would be a good move.

I know just how much difference living near a large body of water can make. I used to live near the coast, where the Gulf Stream flowed by. I could train on my bicycle all winter long and be ready and waiting when the Yankee bike racers came down in the spring, with their cold, stiff legs.
I'm 100 miles further away now, and the winters are quite different. However, we get spring a lot sooner than you do. My pastures are so green and lush that I have to put out bloat blocks. There is so much excess grass that I'm starting to look for a cow to replace one of the cows I sold when I was injured. Keep an eye out for me a really nice Legacy or Traditional cow, preferably with Windridge lineage.

Sounds like a good plan, Hans
We're already looking Brown on the foothill grasses, even on a good water year, rain out of the sky Turns Off on May 1st. The problem has been that this year it hasn't rained since January , with a couple of exceptions of light showers. Day Temps in the lo 80's, nights still 40 ish.
We're being told to cut consumption 20%, which is not that difficult, but I'm kinda glad I'm not trying to irrigate pasture yet. (I'll have to put a timed valve on the daughters' shower tho!)
I don't dread the drought as much as the probability of Wildfires in the hills, normally started by dry lightning, once it starts the smoke pours into the valleys at night. Air quality can be awful.
For today, it's a clear bluebird day! Enjoy the springtime, everybody!
Bill
