It has been raining and cold here for a day straight. I have 2 cows due today very happy that they did not go yesterday or last night in the rain. I suspect they may have some control and can hold off for a little while when the weather is bad. I have had several times when it seams they will wait for better weather if they can. I go out this morning to find one of those cows took a significant amount of hay from the hay bale in a bale feeder and moved it over 20 feet and made her a very nice dry bed. I suspect when I get home there will be a calf in that bed. How did she do this I checked her at 10 last night they were all still standing in the rain and there was no indication of a bed being made at that point. there was only a very small amount of hay between the bale and her bed. I cant see her moving that much with her mouth. I am guessing she pulled it out made a pile and then scooped it up with her horns and carried it over. It had to have taken her several trip and she dropped very little. I think I would have dropped more hay then she did.

What a task! It's a shame you didn't get to see her do it.

she calved last night at 9. Yet another bulls calf. This will be her 3rd bull in a row. I hope I dont get another run of bulls this year. I used a different bull on her last year in hopes of getting some heifers.

Congratulations and sorry at the same time... Bulls aren't as bad as they used to be, since the price of beef is so high now. Actually a yearling or two year old is worth more for beef than as a breeding animal I think. I think younger bulls are more likely to have heifers, and older bulls are more likely to throw bulls. Nature's way of propagating the species and the genetics.

I have a waiting list for beef but bulls dont help me grow my herd. Last year I had 6 bulls and one heifer. This was a young bull I used this time he was 15 months at breeding. I used him on 4 of my girls. So hopefully he will produce some heifers. I have heard you can limit the breading time to try and produce more heifers but not sure how successful that is and I also dont have the time to devote to try that. There has to be something more involved other than random chance.

I had a long bull run, then an equally long heifer run. I was very happy to finally get a bull after so many heifers. This was from the same bull. His bull run took place while he was young. The heifers came as he got older. Then the run seemed to favor bulls again.
I think it is all due to the heifer fairy.

Some contend that it is random chance. No way its not like it just happens to me others have had the same. There is something that affects it or maybe multiple things. We just dont know what it is. could be weather related, nutritional related or maybe age of the animal and maybe many more things that we are not even considering.

Congratulations and be happy about a safe delivery of a calf, especially if his mother is taking good care of him and giving him a good start in life.

It happened again. different cow different herd. this time Colorado Model. It stormed last night. this morning I found Colorado Model had moved enough hay to make a nice thick bed. She had moved it over 50 feet from the bail. you could see she had dropped just enough to see the repeated path she took to cairy it but really she dropped very little on her way. I would have droped more if I had done it. She is not due for a while yet and shows no signs of getting close. So I hope this does not mean she is getting ready to calve. I am just impressed by the thought and skill it took her to do that.

well Gene I milk in the dark at 5 in the morning and then leave for work. If the cows have not completely trampled her bed in the mud when I get home tonight I will take a picture.
