My bride was digging up old items from the land outside our pasture. It had been used as a dumping ground by the owners of the land since the 19th century. She was hoping for a rare find.
This is what she found that caught my eye. Do you know what it is?

It's a calf weaner. Put the knobs in the calf's nose and the spikes would poke momma when the calf tried to nurse. She would not let him/her nurse and the calf eventually was weaned. My granddad had one that he used to wean the Jersey milk cow's calf when the time came. Haven't seen one in years.

Wow,Gene, what a wicked looking contraption! Who knows what she'll find next!
Looks like folks have been raising cows on that property a good long time.

Larry is right and it is borderline medieval torture. Lol.
We we are having the first thunderstorm of the year and a cloudburst with it. Darn. I just put out all new hay bales this evening and now they are drowned. The cows will be laying in them and wasting it.

My gosh. I would say that thing would get the job done. Lost locket? If we only lived closer..... I'm getting pretty good with that metal detector I got. Still working cleaning up these fields.

Ten years ago Jams Tralee Seara came to Paradise Farm in Judy's trailer. The trailer was backed to the loading gate, with a small space on one side. "No way can Seara get through that space!" we thought. We were wrong. That fat little cow went through like a greased pig and was gone!
I began walking her down to herd her into the pasture. It wasn't working. We walked miles, back and forth across the property. Judy was backing me up, covering the sides to make sure Seara didn't just disappear off into the distance. Eventually Seara tired enough to be herded through the gate into the pasture. It was traumatic for her. She never went out of the pasture again, even when I left the gate open. Good cow!
However, something bad happened during the chase. While running through the woods, a nasty limb reached out and grabbed a locket from around Judy's neck. It was an important moment in the chase and Judy couldn't stop, but she took a good look at the crooked little tree that had snatched the locket.
We went back after Seara was safely in the pasture, but couldn't find the locket. Judy was upset, because the picture in the locket was very precious.
I looked for the locket every chance I got, always starting at the crooked tree and working out. The area must have been an old dumping ground, for it was solidly full of trash of all kinds. An antiquer's haven, but an awful place to look for something.
I borrowed a metal detector, but it simply told me that there was something metal in the ground everywhere.
Every year, in the summer, I rake all the leaves off of a big circle around the crooked tree and we dig, looking for the locket and whatever else we can uncover.
Most of the stuff is hidden under tin. Flattened tin cans of all sizes, with tiny holes between them. Just perfect for a locket to fall through.
I recently watched a professional work with a metal detector, looking for civil war relics. I struck up a conversation with him and let him know that there are civil war artifacts on my farm. (Hint, hint!) I told him about the locket and offered a $50 reward if he could find it. He took my name and number and said he would come. I hope he does.
The same offer of a reward goes for anybody that can find the locket. Any takers? It's a great opportunity to score some brownie points with Judy!

Hi Gene,
You made that escape and capture sound simple. LOL. I remember running up and down through the woods repeatedly, jumping a wooden fence. . . and gasping for breath a bit differently. Smile. Thank you and Beverly for continuing the search. I DO appreciate it. I wonder though. . .if it was the branch catching the empty chain that caught my attention and I actually lost it where I crossed the board fence to chase her on the neighbors farm? ( Maybe you will find hidden gold buried over there. I bet there are still treasures buried across Virginia that have yet to be unearthed from when the north moved their troops through Virginia and the south hid their valuables!)

I just saw one of these (very similar in shape but plastic) on Facebook tonight. Not flat like the kind I am used to seeing, but pointy like this. Hmm I guess it goes to show that what's old is new again. - At least maybe the plastic might not be as horrible, or as heavy.

Punk Nose Rings are back in style! You must admit, there was a bit of overkill in that medieval version.
