I have . . to date. . .. not supported across the board parentage testing This week is trying that position. I have seen two non-confirmed cases on dams and I have seen markers on another case sent to me that I believe has a parent that is a Dexter cross - or not a Dexter at all. Doing nothing is not the answer and adding unnecessary costs to the small holder with a a couple cows and one bull is also not the answer. I do believe that BOTH associations should have safeguards and rules in place to protect owners and buyers. Permitting females to be registered with no bull genotype on file if the bull predates the current rules is inviting problems.
How can the association NOT require all females born from AI breedings not be tested? I will venture to say there are more problematic cases from AI breedings that did not take and then the cow was bred by a herd bull or some other bull than any other type errors. Not requiring AI parentage confirmation makes no sense.
All breeders who register cattle from two or more herd sires should be required to confirm parentage on males and females.
All cows registered when there is no genotype on file for the sire should be required to file a genotype.
There should be a strong and enforceable rule in place that can be enforced legally for any animal that has a question raised based on defined criteria, ( DNA markers not consistent with breed population markers, color that appears outside genetic possibility or other scientific results which differ from expected should be required to submit a genotype. At the cost of the association if necessary should that buffer the rule/ requirement legally.
Finally. ... there should be a legally enforceable rule for random testing of females.
