I mailed some samples several weeks ago. The package was a bit bumpy for there was an old straw wrapped in bubble wrap in the envelope, but they package was much smaller than some I mailed in December that were around $3.00 or a bit more. The price was $7.59 and I couldn't send it regular delivery. I joked with the postmaster that the price was ridiculous and that I wasn't not a willing participant in supporting the business of Amazon and the free priority shipping. This particular package never arrived, never arrived and into the second week I thought it might have gotten stuck in the system for postage due or bump in package or .. . . .? I had UCD personnel checking their post office as I checked with mine. It eventually just turned up at the lab. It took more than two weeks and I had given it up for lost.
I mailed a large envelope on a Thursday evening going to Virginia. This mailing would in the past likely have arrived on the second day, third at worse just weeks ago, and yet by the middle of the next week . .. .. . no delivery. It eventually arrived, and again I asked the clerk at the post office what is going on, are you ignoring the rest of us for Amazon? He laughed and suggested that I was basically correct, that Amazon all but "owns" the postal service now, and when Amazon says "jump", USPS asks "how high".
Yesterday I read that USPS has a contract with Amazon to deliver their packages for two dollars each. This includes Sunday deliveries and I can attest to that for a parcel was placed in my mailbox this past Sunday from Amazon. TWO DOLLARS!
Just a simple flat envelop with paperwork and a pad costs me more than that. I've received quite large packages from Amazon on Prime free delivery that if I were to take them to the post office the fee would be easily $20-$30 dollars. I just got one of those too. Quite heavy and the box was 33 inches by about 16-18 inches. Two dollars. What a steal. Those of us purchasing from Amazon with prime and receiving free delivery are being underwritten by all the others who are paying higher costs for postage wouldn't you say?
