Ok guras Ineed advice. Talked to Judy yesterday about Wilcom herd and she is checking on 2 red hefiers for me. Now for the help I have been contacted by two neighbors about my dexters and they want two purchase at least 3 to 4. I have Lucy, her calf and one heifer from same line, 8 AI straws for Breen. I know about Lucifer in back round of Wilcom but lets say 2 hifiers from there, at least one or two condos and how, why, and what could happen to work twords a closed herd between us. Update; one neighbor does want traditional or legacy.

Not really sure what you're asking? Do you mean that can you all sort of share the herd between yourselves and then close the herd to outside animals?

Sorry we thought it could be good for all being with in 1 1/2 mile of each other to start with the mix of best and use AI and one of us select a bull from breedings and then at least semi close our Mercer county herd. Also for me with three of us if someone falls out there are two of us to hold on hopfully.

I have closed herd. Soon to be 2 separate distinct closed herds because I want to keep the 2 blood lines separate. I also have a closed flock of Dominic chickens. Here is how we manage it. First I keep the foundation bull to use as long as I can. So I dont risk loosing any of his genetics. I also select which sons of his will be used on which girls. It gives me lots of options to be able to choose different bulls on different cows every year. Keeps the genes mixed up and I can choose the mating I think will provide the best results. I manage the chickens in a similar way. I kept my first rooster and every year I choose a few of the best roosters to keep and eat the rest. So far I have not had enough hens to cull so I keep them all. Of course the roosters are not registered and I dont know which rooster produced what So I just have to guess based on looks.

Blessings Farm, I'm not quite sure what you are attempting to do....but I do advise that you keep good records so that you know who sires what calves, whether by AI or natural service, and be certain to parentage verify them. And I'd sure outline which person is responsible for what so there are no problems down the line.
