Looking at the historical photos Judy has provided, some Traditional Dexter Cows are decidedly more milky than others, and other than videos from "Across the Pond", I don't see recent photos of those obviously more productive udders. Do they still exist? Who has the Milky girls? Does anyone know the old lines or herds one can follow in the registries to find that kind of productive genetics? If you have what you consider to be Milky Cows, or know of some, how about a photo? Thanks.

These two girls are pretty milky, especially for their size. I have one that produces 4 gallons in the first few months of lactation, but you'd hardly guess she was capable of it by merely looking at her udder. No recent photo, but I think she's due to calve again fairly soon. From what I have seen, when they are fed grain it shows up in the size of their udders. I've also noticed that heavily grained Dexters also seem to sexually mature much more quickly. I wean everything that I can long past 6-8 months, frankly almost to the point of self weaning when I can. I've not yet had a heifer calve prior to two years of age that I've raised from start to finish, though a couple of heifers that we have purchased were bred at an earlier age, but they were fed corn by the prior owner. So from what I can see the early calving issues many run into are in large part human induced from high grain consumption. And I've noticed that the fleshy udders, even in dry cows, start to subside as they are weaned off the grain.

she is 17 I think in the picture. Her daughter in the picture is the girl in my avatar. She also has a very nice udder for her first calving. PS Hans she was 20 months old when she calved and no grain. she was weaned at just under a year old. she bred right after weaning.
