Well, I was out doing a calf check, and feeding all the various groups before the cold hits with the wind and snow off the lake, and I took a couple of photos of Moira and her boy. Obviously he still remembers us bringing him in and putting him next to the wood stove, because to his mother's consternation he kept coming over to see me. Though it's been warm and he is in the barn, it will be cold and snowy again tonight, and he's decided he wants to be an indoor (with heat) bull Whoopie I think is the next to calve. It's supposed to be in a couple of days P.S. since they're in a stall with 4x8 sheets of plywood behind them, you can get a pretty good idea how tall they both are based on their hips to the top of the board. Maybe deduct an inch or two from their height because of the straw bedding on the floor.

He He He! Great pics. The calf is adorable but it's the mamas I think that are really stealing the show in these.
The first, Moira looks like she really has your number. Look at her eyes ...
The second, well that's an expression only another mother really knows. 9mos of this! LOL

Moira certainly is a chunky little thing. I like them like that.
There is something in the straw behind Moira's boy that puzzles me. What is that dark colored thing near his right rear?

I think that's probably only a frozen chunk of manure Gene! One thing about the really cold weather, it makes it very easy to clean the stalls!

By the way, Chautauqua Moira is a non-carrier. I suspect she'd qualify as Kirk's definition of "true short". 100% traditional lines with Ace of Clove Brook as the sire and A2/A2. She'll be 6 years old in May or so, so she's certainly full grown.
Whoopie is a Dwarf, a beautiful cow and Mike's half sister. Last summer at the Armada Fair her dwarf bull calf "Yule" was the champion of all the young bull classes. He was picked over several of the Wieringa's young bulls who also won their classes at the AGM a couple months prior. We'll be bringing him to Virginia so some of you will get to see him in person! I actually think he's improving as he gets a bit older.
Sheril won't let me forget that I wanted to steer Yule when he was a month old since we had so many nice bull calves already...lol

Well, one of the other cows in the stall just calved. Molly had a big red bull calf this morning. Since it was below zero again I brought him in to warm up a bit. Molly is a good girl and she had no problem with that, and is presently staying occupied cleaning up the afterbirth. I'll weigh him shortly, but I'd put him near 50 lbs., he's SO much bigger than Moira's calf the other day. Molly is probably one of if not the largest cow we have, so we're happy she's making some big steers to help pay her way.

I just did that so as to text a photo to Sheril and make her happy. You know the saying, "happy wife, happy life" and all that. He's back out with mom now and I weighed him at 53 lbs.! That's big compared to what we're used to , but Mike did throw exceptionally small calves. This one is out of Dylan and Molly. Dylan is quite short and small, but Molly is a pretty big girl. I'd rather have the big calves out of the big girls of course. Dylan is dun carries red, and Molly is black carries dun and red. At first when he was wet I thought dun, but obviously they both threw their red. Doesn't matter, he'll just be a handsome steer out in the pasture for a couple of years.
