We have only one non Dexter or Highland here, from a Miniature Hereford, this is her Dexter cross bull calf from this year, along with one of our mini-silky fainting goat bucklings. Obviously best friends in the little shelter! We purchase these totes from a local guy who gets them from his work for free. We only pay $30 for each, and it's a pretty simple modification to make a nice little shelter for the youngsters that gets them off the cold ground, and is easy to clean. It is also nice to be able to move them with the pallet forks on the tractor, and I can stack them when not in use to save some space. Here is Mazie's heifer calf, she was all of 27 lbs. at birth, with a 3 month old steer. She's a tiny little thing! A photo of Yule, he's a bit past a year now, and he likes posing for the camera. We're going to keep him as a future sire for some of our cows. Yule beat out two AGM national champions last summer at the local fair and won best young bull in the division. Yule is out of Mike's half sister, Whoopie. Mike and Whoopie's mother made some beautiful Dexters! Another shot of Yule:

Yule looks like a good one, Hans. Nice level top line! Is he gonna get horns or is he dehorned? Thanks for the pics. Try getting one of the mini holstein (seems like an oxymoron) out of his hut!

Bill, We leave the horns on the traditional lines herd, but we dehorn those who are not at a week or so of age. Yule does not meet the "traditional" criteria. We actually prefer to distinguish between the two types, plus we'd have a hard time selling many if we didn't. And we have enough for now (upwards of 100 I think).
Notice the forehead on Yule, vs. that of a polled bull. Even dehorned, it looks much more pleasing to my eye, and adds character to the face. I wanted to point this out when it comes to the "phenotype" discussion earlier. I can pick this boy out as a Dexter.
