This month's issue (Apr/May 2015) of Mother Earth News has a very interesting article - "The Multiple Benefits of Grass-Fed Beef".
Any other reader's out there? You can read it at www.motherearthnews.com/ if you are not a subscriber. The article is written by Richard Channing and discusses grass fed vs. feed lot production, the health of the animals, and the effect these methods have on our health and on the environment. The comparison between prairie-type pastures (full of deep rooted perennial plants/brush) vs. annual mono-crop pastures is very interesting.
I think the article raises a lot of good points, and is what we have been working so hard toward here on our own place. The author also points out that "Genetics also play a role in grass-based system's success. Modern cattle have been bred to function in feedlots, but old-line breeds, some now resurrected, fatten months faster and yield more useable meat when fed grass than breeds with feedlot genetics." GO DEXTERS!!

Sorry Gene. You know me, I couldn't get it. The address I posted will take you to the home page, then just click on the picture of the current issue in the upper right column. The article is listed "in blue" under Features. It is a great article. I also really enjoyed the one by Joel Salatin on rotational grazing. I'm starting a thread on that one today. Maybe you can figure out the links and set that one up for us too. LOL Thanks

I had eggs for breakfast. I was looking at the brilliant deep orange color of the yolks as I scrambled them making a mental comparison to the pale yellow commercial eggs. Ugh. I cannot even stand to use them to bake a cake. If I do not have meat I have raised then I am vegan. I am not eating commercial meat.
