Hello Australia. Its winter and we have one of the strongest cold fronts about to land on top of us. Severe weather warning for blizzard like conditions and wind gusts up to 125kms and a Sheep graziers alert – no surprise there !. We don’t have snow and rarely have frosts. Yes we were very low on grasses back in 2013 – still in recovery mode from agisting 40 head of starving cattle who cut down our native grasses to the stubble and made worse by a very dry and mild Winter and then a dry cool spring. Not cold enough for the cool season growth and then not warm enough for the warm seasoned species to get going. While I am whinging about the freezing conditions, at least we had to get the ride-on out last weekend for the miniature ponies paddock

The good life, yes for sure.
He does have a great temperament. He's breeder I affectionately call the dexter-whisperer. All the moos we brought home from his place are just so adorable and bomb-proofed, laid back and so well-mannered.

I am curious. When IS winter in Australia? What type of temps do you get in winter? When the fires raged a few years ago were they near you? And weren't there floods as well over large areas? When I think of Australia I think of "little" Bindy. Guess she is all grown up now. Are they still at the zoo?

Hi Judy
Winter is June to August and where we are located which is near the coastal ranges of NSW, we tend to have overnight temps of minus 1 to 4 degrees Celsius and daytimes average 10 degrees Celsius. Of course it can get colder overnight, sometimes down to minus 4 and day times can be as warm as 15 which we are expecting today as the rain moves in.
Summers jump to average 15 degrees overnight and up to 33 degrees Celsius. Generally in late Jan and early Feb we usually have a couple of weeks where daytime temps reach 45 and the nights minimum barely go under 25
Yes the fires were near us a few years ago. Thanks to a neighbour we had ‘the phone call’ early enough that we were able to get out of Canberra where we both work and arrive an hour later at the farm before the roads were cut off. Pumps were primed and hoses were ready as we had been on bushfire alert for a couple of days. Dexters were moved into the house yard and were not impressed with sprinklers running.
We also had the sprinkler system going along the boundary fence that was standing between us and the approaching fire. Thick black smoke started to engulf the property within minutes of us arriving and I was really worried.
You run around knowing there isn’t another thing you can do. We had done all we could think of in anticipation of the possibility which was very helpful but while its all happening, it is really scary. I was so worried about the animals. And I now hate gum trees. They just explode in the flames making things appear and sound worse.
Floods were more up north in Queensland but there was some flooding in a nearby town of Goulburn which part of is situated on 100 year flood plains. Our farm is not so affected by flooding rains even though we are at part of a natural water course. Sandy loam soils and the landscape does allow for the water to move quickly on, but we have been flooded in a few times, not on the property but along the road where a small river tends to overflow and flood.
Little Bindi is not so little anymore. She is about to turn 16 and from a quick glimpse of her on TV she has turned into a very attractive teen. She has been out of the spotlight a little in the last few years so I hope she is wanting to come back into it - she has one infectious personality and yes, the family is still at the beautiful Zoo on the Sunshine coast of Queensland.
