I was thinking. . . . . . . . . . . . not so long ago that women were chattel in the legal system of our country and others. . . still are in some countries today.
Someone mentioned the sale animals for the AGM, and I commented there did not seem to be so many. I followed that thought with a question. Why don't they post the animals that have been entered for the shows with their pictures? It woud be fun to go through the categories and try to chose the winners, and then see how my selections compared to those selected by the judge. THAT would offer a great learning experience.
And then the thoughts drifted to the cows in the show. What's the difference between a cow owner parading their cow around a ring and parents putting their child in a beauty contest? Is the child in the show because she made the choice or for the parents to have bragging rights over someone else's kid? We discuss and debate the horrors of dehorning, and castration, and nose rings and ear tags. .. .and the degree of discomfort we cause for the animal. But do we ever consider these cattle that are hauled from one show to another so a cow owner gets bragging rights? Anytime I have to haul a Dexter any distance at all, I am aware of how uncomforable and uneasy they are the entire trip. From the moment they are seperated from their herd and pastures they become watchful. Stop and peer in the trailer and they are on alert . . .vigilent and wary. Go around a sharp turn a bit to fast and the cow is thrown off balance in the trailer, slam on the breaks because an aggressive driver cuts in front of you to try to get a car's length ahead of the line of traffic and the animal can be thrown entirely off their feet. Then get them to the destination, unload them in a strange and confining place with strangers all around, parade them through people they have never seen and cannot trust. . . . . . . .
I am surprised the animal rights groups haven't targeted this activity as cruelty to animals.
