We claim that dexters are a 200 year old breed.... or a 150 year old breed... or a 120 year old breed... Which is it? Surely the radical purists have an exact year.
If we say dexters are a 150 years old breed, then that means that ABSOLUTELY PURE dexters MUST be able to trace ALL of their ancestors back to foundation animals ON THE PEDIGREE back to 1865. If we say dexters are a 120 year old breed, then that would put us at 1895.
Yet, even the "purest" of Dexters have all sorts of blank spots on their pedigrees in the early 1900's up until the 1950's or 1960's
What do blank spots on pedigrees mean? Blanks spots most always signify NON-DEXTERS on the pedigree. We should just fill in those blanks with the words "Likely Non-Dexter, Possibly Polled"... yet sometimes we cheat and simply say "Foundation Animal".... But a "Foundation Animal" in 1940?? Then that would mean that dexters are only a 75 year old breed.
Look at these supposedly "Pure" dexters with blank spots on pedigrees in the 1960's, 1950's, 1940's, 1930's, 1920's..... Those blank spots are almost certainly non-dexters

The hypocritical radical purists want to say that blank spots on THEIR old pedigrees are ok.... but blank spots on YOUR old pedigree is a problem.
100% of Dexters come from non-Dexters... What makes dexters "DEXTERS" is continued selection for their amazing dexter traits. So put down your ancient old pedigrees for a minute, and define a list of traits that make dexters "DEXTERS".... then select for those traits, generation after generation. If you have terrific traditional animals that completely meet every point of the description, then you have a traditional dexter and the ancient old pedigrees with holes in them are historically interesting, but NOT important.
