Beautiful here...66 degrees and sunny today with a breeze off the lake. It's going to be in the low to mid 70's all weekend here into Monday! Woo-Hoo! Makes dealing with the winters and snow here worthwhile the other 6 months of the year. Now is when I'm actually happy I purchase, rather than put up my own hay. I'd be working all weekend since this is the first chance anybody has had to get it cut, raked, and baled.
Hot and dry out there in Oregon Kirk? I bet it's burning up your grass in a hurry. This is when rotational grazing is really helpful, almost essential if you want to preserve what you have and keep the quality of your pasture intact.

I think we have a chance of showers and t'storms this weekend, and I accept any and all...nothing to be gained from turning down a good rain. I'd rather be mowing the weeds than putting out round bales. We have to buy all of our hay. You'll have much nicer temps this weekend than we will, but we make up for that in the winter, don't we? I've never been able to figure out the easier season to have livestock, terrible heat and humidity accompanied by legions of flies or deep cold and frozen waterers. Perhaps we should take a vote? What's more difficult where you are -- summer or winter? I don't know how you handle those winters, Hans.

The weather around us won't matter. My son is coming to visit, so the son will be shining for me.

Yes, Happy Independence Day everybody! Since we're near Canada, we also got to celebrate Canada (Dominion) Day. The Canadians have similar holidays, but a few days different. It's like an extended holiday around here sometimes...lol We're invaded by the Canadians going shopping and getting our cheap (for them) gasoline.
Gale, I actually like the winters, and I think the cows prefer cooler weather as well. I'm not a warm weather person at all. I'll get my wish tonight, the lows are expected to be in the upper 30's to low 40's around here! Pretty amazing for early July isn't it?
Enjoy your son's visit Gene.

I think we are looking at some cooler temps and possibly some rain. It's hard to tell because they keep changing it, we must be right on the edge.
I'm with you Gale, we'll take all we can get. We had such a dry, dry spring. The rain we've had over these past few weeks has been a Godsend. Our fields are green and are starting to grow again.
Gene, Enjoy your weekend!! And Happy Independence Day Everyone!

It was dry and sunny here for the last 4 days. spent the whole time doing hay. Raining today. I made good progress on the hay still 40 more acres to do if we ever get another 4 dry days. 40 acres may not sound like much but it is hilly and I am not farming in this century. With the exception of a new drum mower I am farming in the 1960s and 70s.

Mike,
Congratulations on getting in some hay, even if it is with old, worn-out equipment. Good luck on the other 40.
I'll let you in on a secret: I'm forced to work with old, worn-out epuipment myself. That's just me. My haying equipment is almost as old and worn-out.

Mike, Good job dont feel alone my equipment is from 40's and 50's but most of it was the first Farmalls my family started with. We always say make hay while the getting is good. With 8 days of rain forcast again the area has been harvesting wheat, haying , side dressing and any other thing needing done even if it is still damp.

Ok I left out part of the story the first day I lost 5 hours replacing the radiator in my ford 4000. the radiator I got was the wrong one so I had to go exchange it before I even started. I mowed until 10 o'clock that night. I mow and rake with a ford 4000. I bale with a AC190 and a Vermeer F

It was while trying to fix my old Ferguson hay rake that I hurt myself last fall. As soon as I was able to get around, I finished fixing it. I used it when I baled my first cutting and it worked fine. No need to throw it out, yet. That gives me hope that I'm still worth keeping a little longer, too.
We have had so much rain that for the first time in 14 years the pond overflowed in July. It's normally 4 or 5 feet low. The grasses and clover are so thick and deep that the crabgrass can't sprout and grow. It normally sprouts when the sun shines on the soil and warms it.

Some of you are going to have a tough time with the weather the rest of the month. It looks like the rain is going to continue to fall down. www.accuweather.com/en/weather-news/midwest-midatlantic-frequent-rain-storms-radar-persist-july-long-range-outlook/49877478We're on the North side. Cool temperatures (low 70's) and rain every 4-5 days. The only thing that may be affected here is the maturity of the corn and soybean crops at harvest. They had a tough time last summer getting much of a yield because they were planted late and the cool weather didn't allow much growth. I bet many farmers planted earlier maturing varieties this year, and it looks like it will pay off.

I like to think of it as "Classic" rather than "Antique"!
Weather here is just as expected, Hot,dry and hotter! I was in Northern Illinois over the 4th, and it was perfect weather, clear and sunny , not too hot. The first bit of dry they'd had in weeks, I lucked out! I took a lucky photo of an old farmer taking down his Flag at sunset on Independence Day, I have to figure out how to share it with you all.

Over 4" of rain in last 24 hr. and 10 day forcast guess what 30 - 70 chance of rain. Using weed wacker to weed garden but have picked 15 gallon of beans. Most of garden is yellow need some temps. over 70. The blessing is it is not Nov. thru Feb.
