I made comments to another breeder today. . . . in jest. . . . and afterwards I really started to think about what I said!
American breeders CANNOT breed on their farms in the US what is bred and exported from England to our herd. ADCA and PDCA rules do not permit upgrading/outcrossing.
A Dexter was historically a unique animal. .. in conformation and in other traits. A dual purpose animal . . . . so usually the milk production was less than a singular dairy breed and beef was less than a beef breed.
Dexters did NOT have "big butts" because a true dual purpose animal needs to also have dairy traits and big butts are not found on dairy animals.
So . . . where did the big butts and some of those huge modern udders come from? Upgrading from England. Jersey and Angus in the pedigrees and in several cases UNKNOWN beef animals.
In the late 80's breeders of traditional Dexter cattle without the modern imports have taken a direct hit. There have been two frenzied fads running side by side. . . the red and the polled ( and finally red polled).
Breeders of these animals has something different and based on low numbers and large demand these breeders asked for and received prices that are not long term sustainable in the Dexter breed. In fact these fads will in short order crash this breed. It is already happening. ( I note the Brits are concerned about prices they are receiving for their "Dexters").
For twenty years now, Dexter breeders who stayed true to the breed and worked to sustain the target market financially have been taking a beating watching breeders of imported animals selling outcrossed animals for two or three times the amount they receive for their traditional Dexters. Worse, all these bloodlines are imported! American breeders cannot and could not breed what was being imported and with which they were forced to compete. Those imported Angus, Jersey, and unknown genetics were giving animals color and traits American owners could not produce without outcrossing themselves. ( And many do and sell the animals without pedigrees or papers).
So I am thinking! Maybe it is time for American breeders to have their own appendix registry? Maybe it is time to do the four generation to pedigree purebred and force both ADCA and PDCA to accept American born animals with the same pedigrees that are being imported. ( There is new semen about to be offered from another bull with appendix entries). Time to level the playing field? I have several breeders with actual Dexters who fell out of the registration process who would like to be able to return their animals to registered status as well.
Here is the bottom line. In 1987 an upgraded bull with recorded Angus and Jersey genetics was imported to add red to the American herd. When traditional Dexters were selling for less than $1000 you would pay $3000 for a red cow. In 1990 a multiple upgraded bull with muliple unknown introgressions was imported to add polled to the breed. When traditional horned Dexters were selling for less than $1000 you would pay $3000 to $5000 for these upgraded animals.
Why did the average American breeder permit this? Why didn't YOU stand up and fight for your herd and your breed? And at the least. . . . why didn't you insist that ADCA make provisions for YOU to be able to breed the same genetics on YOUR farm, or instead . . . . . . . . . WHY DIDN'T YOU INSIST THAT YOUR BREED ASSOCIATION DO THE RIGHT THING AND IMPLEMENT RULES THAT DID NOT PUT YOU AT A DISADVANTAGE IN YOUR BREED? 20 YEARS have passed and there have been more imports with outcrossed bloodlines and still YOU cannot compete by breeding the same animal on your farm. 20 years that ADCA could have simply made a rule that an animal with upgrading in the pedigree could not be imported because the US herd is NOT permitted to upgrade.
WHY hasn't that rule been made? Why are animals still being imported that an American Dexter owner cannot breed up on their own farms?
Think it is time to make an upgrade registry and level the playing field and add some competition to those enjoying the benefits of upgraded bloodlines? Currently the US herd is more than EIGHTY FIVE PERCENT upgraded from modern English imports. Hmmmmmm. How did YOU let this happen? Why did YOU let this happen?
