This fall I'm determined to get the outside projects I'm working on finished before the snow sticks for good. I figure I have about 6 weeks to do this unless that El Nino thing delays it, but I'm not going to count on it.
In the meantime it can stay dry for a while, as this time of year if it does rain it seems to take forever to dry things out afterward. The colors were slow to arrive this year, but have rapidly started to catch up and certain trees are loosing their leaves now. I must remind myself to take in the moment once in a while!
We have quite a few calves heading off to their new homes in the next couple of weeks, and quite a few steers and a couple of cull cows that are scheduled very soon before deer hunting starts in earnest.

The trees are changing here and the forecast is nights in the low 30's by sat. Geesh! It is coming.
This was such a weird summer weather wise. Hopefully winter will not follow suit.

Our forecast calls for high 30's on Monday morning. That is using all the technology that the local TV stations can sell you.
I watched a fuzzy caterpillar make its way across the barnyard. It was medium brown in color. I've heard that the darker they are, the worse the winter will be. Usually they are black.

Fall is usually my favorite time of the year here in Michigan. Our temperatures are moderated by the relatively warm lake, so there could be a 10-15 degree warmer difference in low temperatures between the lakeshore areas and the interior of the state. Of course in the spring the opposite is true, and we're usually that much cooler than the interior parts of the state. Sheril and I picked a couple of big boxes of apples this past weekend from the orchard, and we're inviting any of the 4-H kids from the fair, family, and friends this coming Sunday for some Dexter burgers and other good food, apple picking, and all the cider and donuts we can make and they can take home with them. After that nice break it will be back to my list of projects in the coming weeks!

Now how fun is that. If we were closer, we'd be crashing for sure. LOL Yes apple season is here. One of my favorite times. Applesauce Weather has us at 29 now for Sunday. Seems to be going in the wrong direction. I really need to get the rest of my "before winter" list done. We had no water here yesterday. Had to replace the well pump/wire and all. Ouch!! That was a biggy. Wells are deep in this area.

It has been dry here for about a month and very little chance of any rain in the forecast.
I have a huge list of before winter projects to. I have been laid up for a month do to foot surgery. Just starting to get around so will have to start playing catch up soon. first on the list is to tare out an old concrete foundation and use it to fill in a stream crossing that got washed out in the floods this year. Thats mostly backhoe work hoping to start that this weekend. Tried to use the backhoe last weekend to clean up the winter areas and popped a line. its all fixed now ad ready to try again next weekend.

Just came in from outside and my hands are about froze. It's been sleeting and windy; not a fun day to be outside. Good day to bake though. Helps to take the chill off the house.
We are supposed to be down around 28 tonight. If this keeps up we may have a little of the white stuff on the ground tomorrow morning. I was remembering it was just a few yrs ago when we got 8" in late Oct. Not fun!

We aren't that far south of Judy and I spent the day in shirt sleeves. 68 degrees today but supposed to be 35 in the morning. I'm worried about the new chicks and ducklings at the barn. They have no warming lights. They have to huddle for warmth. The smallest chicks and guineas are lucky. They are still in the brooder where they do have heat. I'll wait until Tuesday, when night-time temperatures are supposed to rise and then take them to the barn.
The Dexters have begun putting on their winter coats. Eve's coat is showing more red color than past years. I wonder if that is an indication of the severity of the oncoming winter?
I plan on putting out a square bale of hay for the Dexters tomorrow. I believe that a stomach full of hay helps the cattle stay warm.
Look at Cathy's winter coat.

Yup some snow here today, mostly lake effect stuff. Highest temp I saw all day was 38 degrees. This was just a quick reminder of what's to come, it's due to warm up again this coming week, at least for a while.
As long as the snow holds off long enough for me to rake the leaves off the ground I'm happy!
Sheril and I were out delivering a couple of calves this afternoon. We stopped at a couple of stores on the way home to pick up some supplies for our party tomorrow with some of our helpers from 4H. The parking lots were more empty than we've ever seen on a Saturday afternoon. Everybody must have been watching the Michigan/Michigan State football game...lol
