I began DNA testing and herd parentage verification in the US herd in 2004 using UDD-VGL and establishing the Dexter database there. At the time ADCA was using Canada for testing. That tanked and ADCA had NO lab at all for their members, yet they refused to use UCD-VGL. (Decision based on such a lack of knowledge and professionalism it still stuns to this day) so someone knew Dr. Cothran, who had returned from Univ of Kentucky to take up a professorship, set up his lab with equipment from the defunct Imgen, and continue his research. He admitted never testing cattle before. I think it was 2007/2008 ADCA set up the lab.
When they realized the innovative and professional services of Legacy were leaving a wake in their midst, they voted in DNA testing of bulls to try and catch up, BUT, to maintain the control they hunger, they at first refused to accept testing from UCD. (Many can now recognize the control issues and lack of professionalism behind this edict) Then they changed it but required the markers be given to Cothran. About the same time, I discovered Dr. Cothran had permission to use the ADCA members samples and markers for research ( he was seeking the polled gene) and there was a signed contract betwwn ADCA and Texas Agrilife for ANY research they wished to do on ADCA samples There were NO perameters in the contract.
Well, One of the boasts of TA is cloning. They have cloned numerous species. My samples and info belonged to me and ADCA was not giving up my rights without my permission. Goodness knows what Dexter samples could be part of without our knowledge or permission. I woukd not be surprized by a teeny cloned Dexter. They certainly need to come up with some solution for the large animals, and the mounting birthing problems taking place in a breed sold for "ease-of-calving".
i am puzzled that Dexter owners utter no complaint at their rights being constantly ignored and usurped by the oligarchy.
