Neigbers and us are developing a fear of a repeat of '78 we had above normal temps. and below normal precip. except for two blizzards that socked us in . If I remember right we only had 20 some in. of snow but 15' drifts .

I don't think you can ever predict an actual event of weather more than a week out. So far this fall has been quite pleasant, and my wallet appreciates the reduced feed requirements of the herd. However I also don't want a repeat of a few years ago when it was mild most of the winter with 35 degrees and rain, which then lead to our extra warm spring, then cold weather in May, which killed all the apple blossoms and apple production. Plus it lead to the "drought" (I know Californians would laugh at it).
The best you can do is prepare for everything. That's why the snowmobile is getting a tune up this week despite the sunny skies and 50 degree weather here.

It's not uncommon to see this, without a car in sight, in the parking lots of some Michigan bars on an average day during the winter months! It saves a lot of parking space, but the coat rooms in the bar to store all the gear have to be huge...lol www.exploringthenorth.com/jackpine/snowmos.gif

When I lived in upstate NY many years ago, Oneida Lake would freeze over and the snowmobilers ran all over the place, from bar to bar, I imagine. It was shorter to cross the frozen lake than to drive around it. There were also a lot of "tip-up's" where hardy individuals (not me!) would fish through holes they made in the ice.

Yankee customs are out of my range of experience. Can you fly fish through a hole in the ice? Do they hold bass tournaments on frozen lakes? What if you catch a fish larger than the hole you cut in the ice?
I like to fish for catfish. I scatter slices of bread all over the pond. When I see catfish "rolling" on some slices, I go there to fish. I don't see how I could do that on a frozen pond or lake.
Y'all need to come south for the winter. Even bird-brained birds know that.

Wow.... I think I'm with Gene on this one though. Fishing is more like wading waist deep with a minnow bucket and a full stringer laughing and trying not to slip and go down in the rapids. LOL
