Still waiting on calves and have the bull in with cows for next year . So I dont like the wait and not knowing . So in the old days we had enough herfords and a proven bull that nature seemed to work well and if one missed no lose and a 2nd miss it was hamberger . It will take some time for A I to be of use with all handeling issues too . Just getting them in a head gate is a job . We are not around enough to acually tell when thing happen with the cattle wish they were more like the goats no problem there except the bucks are wild and !!!! So is there any proven pasture breed method ? Are there any signs with a early termination execpt for a obvious heat cycle ? At what point is a blood test the best to insure preg .if any ?

we have only used bioprin a few times it is accurate. I do not recommend palpation it can cause them to abort. We used the blood test before I had a bull and had to borrow a bull. Also used it with a very old cow before using Lute to try and get her bred but we never did get her to take. I do like to know dates. Just watch the bull if he is guarding a cow or putting his chin on her back she is probably getting close. I dont miss to many dates but do miss some. It can get tricky when you have multiple in heat at the same time to to tell who it is.

We do the same even with working away from farm Mon to Fri. We watch If the bull is guarding or more interested than normal – well there is more to it than just those two points in its simple form but trying to explain this in text is proving harder than I thought – sorry. We can just tell – when Bundy is the sire at least With Hank – whole different ball game. Hank has no gentleman-manners; will not ask but demand; and there is no guarding even if Bundy is with him and the girls. Sooooo frustrating BUT in his defence – 10 calves with only one bull calf which we tipped the scales towards by keeping mum on the other side of the fence until the very last minute. Hank will be the sole sire for the 2016 drop and we are seriously considering the use of heat patches since he doesn’t guard nor show any interest once he has done ‘the job’ just so I can know when the due date + 3-5 days will be Never had a slip or aborted foetus to date so cant help there

We only used patches the one summer when we were AIing the girls. (no bull then) It can be hard to keep them on sometimes, especially if you have a lot of brush/trees in the pasture. So have plenty of xtras, doubling up helps a bit. I actually found another one last wk when I was walking through checking fences. LOL

Update: Did NOT use heat pads. Became too lazy to bother finding them to purchase. Yes Hank is sole sire for 2016 and am I soooooo sorry for not getting heat pads. 8 calves due within a 3 week period but not 100% sure of who will calf when and on what day.........................I hate not knowing every detail but only have myself to blame
