I had just finished putting all the poultry into the henhouse and refilling the water tub when I decided to give the cattle an extra bale of hay. I swung open the gate on the hay storage in the barn just wide enought to carry a square bale through. As I bent to get a bale, Cred came squeezing through the gate into the hay.
Yikes! This could be a big problem! If she tore open any of the bales they would be ruined and hard to carry out to a decent place to feed them. I grabbed a shovel and tried to convince Cred to kindly remove herself from the hay storage. She wasn't buying it. Not with all that fresh hay within reach. I had an idea that the opening in the gate wasn't wide enough, so I swung it open wider and went to get behind her and prod her with the shovel.
Evidently, this was a mistake, for Dunder came on a run and went into the hay storage with Cred. Not only that, but Bambi and Eve were also headed that way. My sweet young bride got in the way of that, hollering like she was calling hogs. Now if only I could get Dunder and Cred to come out.
Fortunately, Dunder doesn't like to be touched as well as Cred does, so as I leaned over the gate and tapped his butt with the shovel, he shot out through the gate, trailing hay as he went. Cred responded to the shovel prodding and finally left, too.
It looks like they ruined 6 bales by pulling the strings off of them. Not as bad as it could have been. I started gathering up armloads of hay and carrying it out.
Every Dexter ended up with their own pile of hay. When I finally left to come to the house, it was all peaceful, with the sound of muching hay the only thing you could hear.
Tomorrow morning I will rake up the rest of the loose hay and give them a treat for breakfast.
