Countryside Magazine. One of my favorite country reads. I've subscribed for 25 years and even have a disc of the early talk forum before it became Homesteading Today. Their latest issue published results of a survey they ran. Here are some of the things I found interesting.
71.4 % of those who responded preferred to read articles about gardening, 65.3% preserving food and 64.1% self-reliant living while only 38.7% chose livestock. The online responses were 70.9%, 65.3% and 46.4%.
65.2% placed themselves as living in rural communities and 21.7% small town. Interesting that 13.1% lived in suburban or urban communities.
For those who raised livestock, 29.2% raised beef cattle, 10.8% dairy, only 4.8% rare/exotic breeds. Chickens were 85.5% ( I guess everyone knows all there is to know about chickens because they didn't vote for more articles).
When asked why they raise livestock. . . . . . meat 62.8%, dairy 26.7%, income 33%. HOBBY> 55.2% ( the online stats were 70.8%, 37.4%, 37.9%, and 57.8%
728% were avid gardeners. (online was lower at 66.7%)
When asked how much of their garden harvest they preserve. . . 23.9% said they preserve 25-50 percent while 35.6% preserved more than 50%.
This one is interesting! When asked how much land is devoted to agriculture. . . . 30.9% responded less than 1/2 acre with 19.7% 1/2 to 1 acre. Only 6.4% had 21-40 acres and over 40 was 10.1%
When asked how much money was spent on their propery ( which included gardening, livestock, poultry, etc.) 47.0 percent (39.9 online) spent less than $1000 and 33.% spent $1000-5000.
40.7%(46.2%) were male with 65.6% (78.9%) married and 59.3% female with 53.8% married.
AGE - - interesting that most were middle aged with 45-54 15.7%(29.9%) 55-64 28.7% (29.7%) and the largest percentage ! ! ! >>>65-74 which was 30.1% (13.3% online)
This is not the entire survey nor the percentage of answers in all the categories. Just some I found interesting.
WE are now in the Harvest Moon.
