had the first calf of the year last night. Old faithful right on time. well she is not really old this is her third calf. But all have been with in a few days of each other. I thought we were going to have a problem at first head and only one hoof came out. I tried to check her out but she was having none of that and walked away. kept our distance and waited for her to lay back down so I could run up and get a rope on her. She laid back down but by the time I could get there with the rope she started pushing and out it popped. Even with the one leg back she poped it right out just as quick or quicker then any of the others. Another bull calf so I guess the bull streak continues.

Congratulations, Mike.
I'll bet you breathed a sigh of relief when she popped him out!

ya Gene my biggest fear is that she was not going to let me catch her to help. It really was a quick birth. this is the first one I have seen with one leg forward and one back. I have always heard they cant deliver like that but she sure did not have any problem with it.

One more great feature of our Dexter cattle. Easy calving. The small calves and their mothers' ability to keep in good health make them a wonderful breed.
I'm saddened when I read of those who have bred away from that. It is becoming more common to read of the difficult births that have appeared in some of the modern cows. I've heard of calves as large as 65 pounds!

Congratulations Mike! And doubly so on the potentially problem delivery.

Bring him over here. It's not supposed to rain here tonight.
