Another two calves yesterday. Both heifers. Our weather has been absolutely beautiful for the past week or more. Sunshine and warm temperatures, other than yesterday, when we briefly had some snow flurries in the morning and a stiff wind off the lake. But the skies cleared for the afternoon and it made it to the mid 40's. The high the day before was 70! But the sunshine has been notable for us compared to most years. I was thinking a month ago we were going to have some days when we'd have a half dozen calves in a day in some instances...it doesn't look like that's going to happen, but I've seen two born simultaneously. We're on a pretty serious heifer streak here this year though, which is good, because we are making good progress on our "waiting list" of current and upcoming customers looking for heifers. I just wish that they could go to their new homes a little sooner, but I'll enjoy all the little calves blazing around the pastures as they find their running legs Although we have the cows in sacrifice areas, I've set up temporary hi-tensile wires at the gate locations at a creep height that the calves can hang out in the pastures. It also pretty much eliminates the possibility that they get through the hi-tensile fence, and can't find their way back to their mom, requiring my intervention to open a gate and try to move them back. I've left the fences off most of the winter, and now that the grass is starting to green up, I've had to check them out and make sure they're hot.

good sounds like the weather timing is working out. We had a bull born yesterday. We do have rain today but that is good we could use some rain here. Got a couple of week break here before we have anymore or so I think.

Yes Mike, we had a rough few weeks and were really sweating the weather, but it's turned out to be OK. We're expecting a bit of rain in the next couple of days, but there is no way it's going to be anything like the melting snow/rain spring thaw mud that we had. They have straw down to calve in, and the temperatures are mild enough. My guess is that our calving season is going to drag on for a couple of months. I was really worried they would all drop on April 7th in 10" of mud water.

And...two more heifers when I showed up this morning. Both long legged and one red and one black. Normally I wished for shorties, but having these long leg girls makes the decision to keep or sell easy...they are sold. It's been pretty hard the past few years with all the shorty heifers that we've retained and not a lot of income from heifer calves to cover the expenses (hay being a big one). This year looks a lot better on the income side Of course there are all kinds of other ways we can spend it too.
