Last year there was a high five when a former breeder of traditional Dexters who drifted into breeding modern horned and horned from polled lines purchased a traditional bull. There was hope for more traditional Dexters to be added to the American herd.
A member of this breeding family has been displaying what is being termed " traditional bred" calves on the pages of Facebook. They may be bred with a traditional bull, but that does not mean the calf is a traditional bloodline if the cow is from upgraded modern imports, and suggesting otherwise in advertising is not being forthright.
Although it is promising to have a long-time prominent breeder acknowledging and promoting the traditional preservation effort using a traditional bull over anything but traditional cows does not change their bloodline status for the preservation effort!
If you wish to breed within the guidelines of the preservation effort, than you need to breed within the preservation bloodlines.
A traditional bull bred to a modern horned cow produces a modern horned calf and a traditional bull bred to a horned descended from polled cow produced a horned descended from polled calf! There is NO provision for breeding up in the preservation lines.
Remember this when you select your breeding animals.
