Curious I decided to do a cursory search now and then of the original founders of the breed in England. The first one mentioned is B. de Bertodano. He was always listed in the herd books with just the initial B, but appears his name was Baldomero. I found this comment on a genalogy site and a photo of his tombstone " Baldomero de Bertodano, a retired Spanish solicitor who had practiced in Swindon, who bought Cowbridge House 1899 and died 1921". Often, the herd identifiers of the early breeders reflected the names of their estates, and the Bertodano herd name was Cowbridge. The first Dexter imported to Australia was Cowbridge General. ( Photo is with his pedigree in the Legacy World ancestor files). There is little to find on this gentleman, but it seems he was either a son of Spanish Baronet, or he inherited that title before his death, though being a solicitor seems to have been quite a few down the rungs of a ladder if you were the son of a Baronet? His tombstone is impressive. The second owner was always listed as the Duchess of de La Warr. Her herd identifier was Buckhurst. I found this in the Peerage listings: Gilbert GEorge Reginal Sackville, son of the 7th earl, by the Hon. Constance Mary Elizabeth, d. of the 1st Baron Laminton, married 1st, 1891, Hon. Muriel Agnes Brassey, d. of the ist Baron Brassey (b.1872) who obtained a divorce 1902, (she resides at the Manor House, Bexhill-on-Sea. . . . . . . Interesting in that divorce was rarely heard of in this time period as I recall. Below are photos of Cowbridge House and Buckhurst Estate.
