After the initial postings by Mericharmed on the Dexter talk groups and responses by members. . . things were quiet. Members had NO idea of the continuing internal struggle to control ADCA and only a few with connections to the leadership had any idea of the trouble brewing.
On the day the President of ADCA, Kathleen Smith was notified of the complaint filed by Richard Gradwhol with the police and the volcano erupted, Kathleen had attended a wedding. When she returned home from the wedding, the house was chilly and a fire was started in the woodstove as Kathy began to read and react to emails and voicemails. she was receiving from leadership. Her first phone call, from another member of the board, inquired " What is going on here" and she found out about the events taking place behind the scenes. As President of ADCA, and with no knowledge of what WAS going on, Kathy Smith relates that her first inclinations and acts were to protect ADCA and it's reputation and in a discussion with Rosemary, ( extremely upset by the actions of Gradwhol and some other BOD members) Rosemary stated she would "resign" before she would have her life destroyed by the actions of antagonists in a cattle club. In the middle of this drama, the woodfire started by Kathleen Smith set her chimney on fire. . . and the fire department had to be called. Amid the emergency to save her home from burning, and the drama playing out in emails, voicemails, and phone calls, Kathleen Smith erred in an attempt to calm the situation by telling the members of the board that Rosemary Fleharty has resigned. Rosemary Fleharty never resigned. There was never an official document of resignation, but this was all that was needed for the enemies of Rosemary Fleharty to move forward with their plans to oust her from ADCA along with all the other officers. I termed this to be a "TAKEOVER" and find that term to still be germaine. The members, who actually had rights in 2004 were never advised nor consulted. In a telephone call to Richard Gradwhol, Kathleen Smith informed me that she suggested to Mr. Gradwhol that he resign his position and leave ADCA leadership, and in response, Mr. Gradwhol informed her that they were going to take all of them out of their offices. The lines already seemed to have been drawn.
Kathy Smith stated that on the next day she was receiving emails from John Potter and the concensus of the discussions was that John Potter, Anthony Bauer and Sandy Thomas would "take over" and they would handle the registry and other offices.
Kathy Smith related during this time period she received a call from a man in Colorado who wanted clarification on information given to him that Rosemary Fleharty had threatened to "burn" the registry. It was the first she had heard of this rumor and it appeared to have been spread by members of the board. Although Kathy tried to clarify with the board that any comments relating to "burning" of anything came from her on the night the fiasco erupted when her house was on fire.. . . this false accusation continued to be spread. Meanwhile the leadership had divided into what came to be known a the "majority" and the "minority". The majority had ceased to communicate with their fellow members who disagreed with them in philosophy and in deed.
All that was taking place within their leadership was not known to the members. It was not until a letter was sent out in May of 2004 that members were aware of the struggle and also began to take sides.
Next up: A list of members of leadership in the spring of 2004 and available emails generated by various leadership at th time . . . . (and a reminder that those with differing or additonal information are welcome to add it).
